Help Your Middle Schooler Think Before Asking AI
A short preview of the thinking behind the guide by Chris Pinas, physics teacher and educator.
AI isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes your child needs to think a little longer.
Sometimes the answer is already in the textbook.
Sometimes class notes are enough.
Sometimes the best person to ask is a parent or teacher.
And sometimes, when it is allowed and genuinely useful, AI can help.
Different kinds of help
- Independent thinking
- Existing resources
- Another person
- A tool, such as a calculator, AI, etc.
The important skill is knowing the difference.
Think First
Before reaching for a tool, give thinking a chance.
When a child gets stuck, the quickest solution isn’t always the best learning solution.
The Think First approach helps families create a small but important pause before the next move.
That pause can help your child ask:
- Do I understand what I’m being asked to do?
- What do I already know?
- Can I make a first attempt?
- Do I actually need help?
And if help is needed:
- What kind of help would be most useful right now?
Sometimes the answer will be AI.
Sometimes it won’t.
The goal is not to make AI part of every learning moment.
The goal is to help your child make better learning decisions.
Intellectual independence in practice
Not avoiding the tool, but thinking first. Here follows a simple example illustrating the difference.
Two pictures illustrating the difference between technological independence and intellectual independence

The difference isn’t whether the tool is used. It’s who does the thinking.
The philosophy of the guide
We are not raising children who know how to get answers from AI. We are helping raise children who know how to think, learn, solve problems and find answers — and who can use AI intelligently when it genuinely helps them.
